CSA Suriname

Our Suriname-based Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) Initiative is rooted in a deep commitment to the well-being of the Black diaspora in the USA and EU. By providing traditional herbal medicines and health foods directly sourced from Surinamese farmers, we address health disparities while empowering local communities. We prioritize fair trade practices, sustainable agriculture, and cultural preservation, celebrating the rich heritage of Suriname and the African diaspora. Our CSA fosters a supportive community, offering a platform for dialogue and resources on health, cultural identity, and sustainability.

About the project

Starting point

Situation: Health disparities disproportionately affect the Black diaspora in the USA and EU, with limited access to culturally relevant health solutions.

Need: A holistic approach to health that integrates traditional knowledge with modern practices, while supporting local communities and sustainable agriculture.

Goal: To create a CSA model that addresses health needs, empowers Surinamese farmers, and fosters cultural appreciation within the diaspora.

Support from local communities

Farmer Partnerships: Building strong relationships with Surinamese farmers, providing training and resources to ensure sustainable and ethical farming practices.

Community Engagement: Collaborating with local organizations and community leaders to raise awareness about the CSA and its benefits.

Cultural Preservation: Documenting traditional knowledge of herbal medicine and food preparation, ensuring its preservation for future generations

Possible Endpoint

Flourishing CSA: The CSA has established a sustainable model, providing a consistent supply of high-quality, culturally relevant health products to the diaspora.

Empowered Farmers: Surinamese farmers have increased incomes, improved livelihoods, and a deeper appreciation for their agricultural heritage.

Healthier Diaspora: Members of the Black diaspora experience improved health outcomes, a stronger connection to their cultural heritage, and a sense of community belonging.

Model for Replication: The Suriname CSA serves as an inspiring example of how traditional knowledge and sustainable agriculture can be harnessed to address health disparities and promote cultural preservation.
